Cobalt International Energy, founded in 2005, is an exploration and production company pursuing oil in the deep offshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico and West Africa, with an emphasis on sub-salt and pre-salt exploration, development, and production.

The company has accumulated a deepwater exploration portfolio with interests in the sub-salt Miocene and Inboard Lower Tertiary plays in the Gulf of Mexico and in three large blocks offshore West Africa with pre-salt analogs to Brazil.
