Midstates Petroleum Company, Inc. is an independent exploration and production company focused on the application of modern drilling and completion techniques in oil and liquids-rich basins in the onshore U.S.

The company is primarily focused on oilfields in the Mississippian Lime trend in northwestern Oklahoma; the Anadarko Basin in Texas and Oklahoma; and the Upper Gulf Coast Tertiary trend in central Louisiana.

Midstates was founded in 1993 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

Midstates Petroleum Company has been backed by First Reserve Energy Investors since August 2008.

On May 1, 2016, Midstates Petroleum filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

On October 21, 2016, the company emerged from bankruptcy.
